Virtualisation...

This Consultancy offering from greenwise-it provides you with assistance in deciding if and how virtualisation could assist your company as part of a holistic Green IT Strategy.
Virtualisation has become the first call for companies looking to “Green” their IT, but to be implemented effectively, it needs to be planned to fit in with the objectives and constraints of the particular organisation, its working practices and environment.
Driving the best environmental efficiencies out of a datacentre it is not just a matter of virtualisation and consolidation. The working practices of the organisation need to be captured analyzed along with the physical location of the servers within the datacentre and the proposed technologies to ensure that any project achieves measurable and sustainable improvements to the carbon footprint of the IT Department.
We have found that if IT is to truly achieve ‘Green-ness’ then it needs to be following a well defined, comprehensive, consistent and holistic Green IT Strategy, that sets meaningful ‘Green related’ goals and targets for IT to achieve in the short and medium term. Virtualisation needs to sit within this strategy which will ideally also be fully aligned and complementary to the overall corporate Green strategy).

We can assist you in developing, implementing and maintaining virtualisation as part of a Green IT strategy. Through our years of experience we have developed a simple yet highly successful 5 (6) step methodology for evaluating the benefits of virtualisation:
-
1. Define the Vision, the goal. Understand and articulate what are your
drivers for implementing virtualisation.
2. Where are you now? This will involve analysing status of any current Green IT initiatives you are undertaking (or have undertaken in the past) to define the context for virtualisation in a green context. It will also provide a baseline of your current environment including key Green IT measurements (energy consumption, heat loading) etc. This is information that will be used later to demonstrate tangible improvements.
3. Evaluation. The virtualisation market has grown and matured, offerings are available from VMware, Microsoft and Citrix. Platforms are also diverse and need to be considered against the goals of the Virtualisation and Consolidation. At this stage we present the best technology portfolio to achieve the goals of Virtualisation within the over-arching Green IT Strategy.
4. Design. The chosen technology is then honed into a design that can be implemented to deliver the stated objectives.
5. Publicise, educate, promote and implement the Virtualisation Strategy. We recommended that this should be undertaken by using a formal Project Management approach.
6. Measure success and sell benefits. A key activity is the constant evaluation and promotion of the benefits of Virtualisation within the Green IT strategy, both within IT and in the organisation as a whole.
7. (Step 1 re-visited). To ensure the on-going validity of the Virtualisation Strategy this step involves a periodic evaluation of the goals and aims of the Virtualisation Project itself and its contribution to the efficiency goals of the IT Green IT Strategy.
