Setting a Green IT Strategy...

This Consultancy offering from greenwise-it provides you with assistance in developing a meaningful, relevant, comprehensive, and holistic Green IT Strategy for your organisation.
We find that even today there are many organisations that do not have a Green IT Strategy. Even in organisations that have undertaken some initiatives under the ‘Green IT’ banner there appears to be little consistency and a lack of an integrated approach.
Typically in these organisations the Green IT Initiatives have been piecemeal and fragmented, ranging from Virtualisation and Server consolidations projects, to printing rationalisation and desktop power saving implementations, to promotion of revised ‘Green’ working practices, such as home working. There are however significant issues with this piecemeal approach, and these include:
We have found that if IT is to truly achieve ‘Green-ness’ hen it needs to be following a well defined, comprehensive, consistent and holistic Green IT Strategy, that sets meaningful ‘Green related’ goals and targets for IT to achieve in the short and medium term (ideally this Green IT strategy will also be fully aligned and complementary to the overall corporate Green strategy).
We can assist you in developing, implementing and maintaining your Green IT strategy. Through our years of experience we have developed a simple yet highly successful 5 (6) step methodology for the implementation of a meaningful Green IT Strategy:

- Although most (if not all) of these initiatives do indeed relate to
‘Green-ness’ it is quite possible that they actually conflict
with each other.
- By the very fact that it is a piecemeal approach means it lacks overall
co-ordination and goals, and is therefore naturally limited in both
scope and benefit.
- It tends to emphasise reduction in energy usage etc from IT, but it
rarely encompasses and promotes how IT can be an enabler of ‘Green-ness’
for the organisation as a whole – this is very much a missed opportunity.
- It rarely takes into account the role that Green IT can play in helping the organisation achieve the required corporate goals for e.g. Carbon Reduction Commitment, achieving the Carbon Standard and other impending legislative and regulatory requirements.
- Step 1. Define the Vision, the goal. Understand and articulate what
are your Green IT aims, what are your corporate Green aims etc. What
are your drivers for Green IT, and broadly what do you want to achieve.
Key within this phase is also clearly defining the scope of Green IT
in your organisation.
- Step 2. Where are you now? This will involve analysing any current
Green IT initiatives you are undertaking (or have undertaken in the
past). It will also provide a baseline of your current key Green IT
measurements (CO2 emissions) etc. This is key information that will
be used later to demonstrate tangible improvements. At this stage we
will also look at any existing Green governance that you have in place
and identify individuals in your organisation with any Green IT responsibilities.
- Step 3. Establish, publish and verify the Green IT Strategy. This
will detail the short, medium and even long term objectives of the Green
IT strategy. It will contain specific metrics and KPIs to evaluate the
on-going success of the strategy. The corporate governance requirements,
including required organisational structure to manage the on-going implementation
and maintenance of the Green IT Strategy will also be defined.
- Step 4. Publicise, educate, promote and implement the Green IT Strategy.
We recommended that initially this should be undertaken by using a formal
Project Management approach.
- Step 5. Measure success and sell benefits. A key activity is the constant
evaluation and promotion of the benefits of the Green IT strategy, both
within IT and in the organisation as a whole.
- Step 6 (Step 1 re-visited). To ensure the on-going validity of the Green IT Strategy this step involves a periodic evaluation of the goals and aims of the Green IT strategy itself. This is to ensure on-going alignment to overall corporate goals and any new regulatory or legislative requirements. The frequency of these periodic reviews will be stated within the Green IT Strategy itself, as will the individual(s) responsible for ensuring it is undertaken (part of the Green IT Governance responsibilities).
