We have used a question and answer format to explain what the Greenwise-IT Green ICT Maturity Assessment is, and why it will be of value to your ICT organisation.
Question –
what is the Greenwise-IT Green ICT Maturity Assessment?
Answer - This
is an assessment framework to determine the maturity level of an organisation’s
response to meeting the challenges of Green ICT.
It provides an organisation with a baseline from which to measure improvement
over time. It has a much wider scope than simply measuring the ICT related
Carbon Footprint.
The overall goal (and primary benefit) of the Green ICT Maturity Assessment
is that it provides an ICT organisation with a well defined framework
for assessment and on-going improvement, and it t also facilitates a the
adoption of a more strategic, proactive and integrated approach (rather
than isolated tactical responses) to dealing with the challenges of Green
ICT.
Question - What
are the levels of maturity?
Answer - There
are 6 defined levels of maturity that an organisation can achieve(0-5):
Level 0 - No ‘corporate’ awareness of the need for Green ICT.
Little evidence of Green ICT related initiatives.
Level 1 - The need for Green ICT is recognised throughout the IT Division,
and there is awareness of the primary concepts and principles associated
with Green ICT.
Level 2 - There is evidence of basic Green ICT initiatives being undertaken
(but no overall Green ICT goals, plans, or strategy are yet in place).
Level 3 - A Green ICT Strategy is defined, and evidence that ICT management
are actively committed to delivering strategy.
Level 4 - Monitoring and measuring is in place and Green ICT is a fully
integrated element of tactical and strategic ICT operations.
Level 5 - ICT is seen to be enabling a greener business organisation,
and becoming a promoter of ‘Greeness’ throughout the organisation.
Question –
So how is maturity assessed?
Answer - There
are 11 core elements of Green ICT competency that the Assessment covers
(although more can be added depending on the individual requirements).
These 11 individual core elements of competency are grouped into 3 overall
categories:
The ICT Management System
The ICT Estate
The ICT Practices
Question – How is
the Assessment carried out?
Answer – By one of our trained consultants.
The methods of investigation (to determine your maturity level) include
interviews with key staff, observation, analysis of documents and records,
and pre-defined questionnaires.
Question – How long
will it all take?
Answer – That really depends on the
size of your ICT organisation (and the defined scope of the Assessment).
Generally the investigation phase lasts around 1 week.
Question – and we
can use this to measure our improvement (increasing maturity) over time?
Answer – Exactly. As well as providing
you with an indication of your current level of maturity the assessment
will also identify the key areas of improvement required for you to move
to the next level.
